Creating Individual Assignments
You create assignments from the Build tab. Regardless of the assignment type or collaboration options, the basic process for creating assignments is the same.
Step 1: Selecting Assignments for Individual Students
- From the Build tab, under “Course Tools”, click Assignments. The Assignments screen is displayed.

Step 2: Creating a New Assignment for Individual Students
- Click Create Assignment. The Create Assignment screen is displayed.

Step 3: Creating Assignments for Individual Students
- In the “Title:” text box, type an easily recognized title for the assignment. In this example we have used Research Paper.
- In the “Instructions:” text box, type the instructions for the assignment.
- Under “Student submission format”, select the assignment type.
- Under “Assignment recipients”, select All Students individually.
- Under “ Due Date”, select the assignment due date by clicking the calendar icon and select the assignment due time by clicking the clock icon. Set the cutoff date and time as well.
- Under “Grading”, select Allow the assignment to be graded and select whether or not you want the scores immediately released to students once graded. You will then need to choose the grade type. You can choose to grade using numeric grades, alphanumeric grades, or grade by grading form (rubric). For numeric grades, enter the maximum grade.

Step 4: Selecting Additional Assignment Options for Individual Students
- Expand the More Options area and make your selections.
• You can allow students to take back assignment submissions that have been submitted before the due date in order to edit them.
Note: Assignments that have the “take back” feature enabled are not gradable by the instructor until after the due date.
• You can allow students, in addition to instructors, to publish their own submissions.
- Click Save.
The assignment you created is now on the Assignment page (not illustrated).

Creating Group Assignments
With group assignments, students work collaboratively on a project and all students in the group receive the same grade. Except for the Send assignment to settings, the process for creating group assignments is the same as for creating individual assignments.
Step 1: Creating Group Assignments
- From the Build tab, under “Course Tools”, click Assignments (not illustrated).
- Click Create Assignment (not illustrated).
- In the “Title:” text box, type an easily recognized title for the assignment. In this example we have used Research Paper .
- In the “Instructions:” text box, type the instructions for the assignment.

Step 2: Selecting Learning Groups
- Under “Assignment Recipients”, select Groups of Students and click Select Groups. The “Select Learning Groups” pop-up window is displayed and existing groups are listed.
- Select the groups that you want to send the assignment to.
- The “Select Learning Groups” window will close. Click Save (not illustrated).

Editing Assignment Properties
You can edit assignments from either the Build tab or the Teach tab. If the assignment has not yet been viewed by students, you can edit all the assignment properties, including title, description, type, and grading. If the assignment has been viewed, you cannot:
- edit the assignment type (text with attachments or web site)
- change the students assigned to it.
Step 1: Editing Assignments
- From the Teach Tab, under “Course Tools”, click Assignments (not illustrated).
- In the Assignments screen, locate the assignment that you want to edit.
- From the ActionsLinks drop-down menu, click Edit Properties.
- Edit the assignment and click Save (not illustrated).

Grading & Publishing Assignments
You can view, grade, and publish assignments from the Assignment Dropbox in the Teach tab. The Assignment Dropbox provides five tabs that follow the progress of an assignment.
Step 1: Selecting Assignment Dropbox
- From the Teach tab, under “Instructor Tools”, click Assignment Dropbox. The Assignment Dropbox screen is displayed.

Step 2: Viewing Submitted Assignments
- Click the Submitted tab. The list of submitted assignments is displayed.

Step 3: Grading Assignments
- Locate the submission you want to grade and click the title of the assignment. The Assignment Submission screen is displayed.
- View the submission, including any attachments.

Step 4: Grading Assignments
- In the “Grader/Reviewer Comments:” text box, enter your comments.
- Under “Save Options”, select Return graded submission to Student and, in the text box, enter the grade.
- Click Save.
- The assignment is moved to the Graded tab, the grade is automatically added to the Grade Book (not illustrated).

Step 5: Publishing Submissions
You can publish submissions that you would like all students in your course to see.
- In the “Assignment Dropbox”, for the assignment you are working with, from the ActionLinks drop-down menu, select Publish Controls.

Step 6: Publishing Submissions
- Click Publish. The submission is copied to the Published tab and made available to the entire class for viewing.

Step 7: Publishing Submissions
- Click the Published tab. The assignment you wanted to publish is now listed under the published tab.

Downloading Multiple Assignments
Assignments can be downloaded to your computer's hard drive by zipping all student submissions in Blackboard Vista. Zipped assignments can be saved to your computer for later review. Once assignments have been downloaded they can be viewed without logging back into Blackboard Vista. This feature is very convenient when grading assignments that you wish to track changes such as in a Microsoft Word document.
Step 1: Selecting Assignment Dropbox
- From the Teach tab, under “Instructor Tools”, click Assignment Dropbox. The Assignment Dropbox screen is displayed.

Step 2: Viewing Submitted Assignments
- Click the Submitted tab to view all assignment submissions.
- Click the View by: drop-down arrow to select a particular assignment. In this example we have selected the Case Study assignment.
- Click the Go arrow to sort by the selected assignment. In this example only submissions for the Case Study assignment are displayed.

Step 3: Selecting All Assignments
- Check the Checkbox to the left of the heading "Title". This will select all students' assignment submissions.
- Click Create Printable View.
- The Compiled Submissions screen is displayed.

Step 4: Previewing Compiled Submissions
- For all submitted assignments the Instructions, Grading Criteria, Submission (including attachments), and Comments are displayed.
- Click Save to File.
NOTE: To print compiled submissions, click Print.

Step 5: Downloading Multiple Assignments
- The following message is displayed: "Selected submissions have been saved to your Content Manager, accessible from My Blackboard Vista."
- To download the submissions, click zipped assignment submissions link. In this example the link is titled Blackboard Workship 015-AssignmentSubmissions-2008-Apr-28-04-49-50.zip.

Step 6: Saving Multiple Assigments
- Click Save to download compressed (or zipped) assignment submissions folder to computer.

Step 7: Locating Downloaded Assignments
- Select location to save the compressed assignment submissions folder on your computer. In this example, we saved the compressed assignment submissions folder on the Desktop.
- Click Save.

Step 8: Accessing Downloaded Assignments
- Locate the compressed assignment submission folder on your computer. In this example, we saved the folder on the Desktop.
- Double-click the folder to access the files located within the folder (not illustrated).
NOTE: Once you have graded all assignments, you will need to log back into Blackboard Vista to record the grades in the grade book.
NOTE: Edited assignments can be returned to students through the Assignment Dropbox.
